چکیده

Mucormycosis can be a devastating and fatal disease if not treated promptly; unfortunately diagnosis can be a delayed process. Depending on the Hospitals ́ resources diagnosis can be more accurate or not. The mainstay of treatment is still surgical debridement with antifungal therapy. We present a case of a 75-year-old female, with immunosuppression and uncontrolled diabetes that presents to the emergency room with right hemifacial edema. CT scan revealed occupation of the right maxillary sinus, ethmoidal and sphenoid sinus and cranial base bone erosion with close proximity to the brain. Culture and biopsy specimens were taken with a delayed diagnosis of Mucor. The patient survived three months after surgical and antifungal therapy despite a very poor prognosis. A successful treatment of rhinocerebral mucormycosis due to Rhizopus oryzae

Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection caused by filamentous fungi of the Mucoraceae family. The genera most commonly responsible are Mucor or Rhizopus. The disease occurs mostly in association with diabetic ketoacidosis. Mucormycosis has an extremely high death rate even when aggressive surgery is done. Death rates range from 25-85% depending on the body area involved. A case of rhinocer...

Free Perforation of Sigmoid Colon Secondary to Invasive Mucormycosis in a Critically Ill Patient

Mucormycosis is a clinical entity attributed to opportunistic fungal infection of order Mucorales. This includes several pathogenic subtypes. It commonly affects the rhinocerebral sites and the immunocompromized patients with devastating results. Visceral mucormycosis is a relatively rare complication. We report the first free sigmoid colon perforation secondary to invasive mucormycosis and dis...

Tumor shape pulmonary mucormycosis associated with sinonasal aspergillosis in a diabetic patient

Mucormycosis is a rare and life-threatening fungal infection of the Mucorales order occurring mainly in immunosuppressed patients. The most common forms are rhinocerebral but pulmonary or disseminated forms may occur. We report the case of a 61-year-old patient in whom pulmonary mucormycosis was diagnosed during his first-ever episode of diabetic ketoacidosis. While receiving liposomal amphoter...

Deferasirox, an iron-chelating agent, as salvage therapy for rhinocerebral mucormycosis.

Iron availability is a critical factor in the growth of Mucorales (5). Here we report the novel use of deferasirox (Exjade; Novartis), an iron chelator recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of transfusionrelated iron overload (3), as salvage therapy for a patient with progressive rhinocerebral mucormycosis. A 40-year-old man presented to an outside hospita...
